The Spring Festival: A Time of Reunion and Celebration
The Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year, is the most important traditional festival in China. Celebrated on the first day of the lunar calendar, it marks the beginning of spring and is a time for families to come together, honor traditions, and welcome good fortune.
Originating from ancient agricultural practices, the festival celebrates the end of winter and the arrival of warmer weather. Dumplings resemble ancient Chinese gold ingots, representing wealth, while fish signifies abundance.
Another cherished tradition is giving red envelopes (hongbao) filled with money to children and unmarried adults. This act conveys blessings and good wishes for the coming year. Red, the color of joy and luck in Chinese culture, is omnipresent during the festival, seen in decorations, clothing, and gifts.
The celebrations continue over 15 days, culminating in the Lantern Festival. On this day, people light and release colorful lanterns into the sky or rivers, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Riddles are often written on the lanterns, adding an element of fun and intellectual challenge.
